Altered Levels of Nodal Excitability by Rate-Dependent Inhibitory Effects of Essential Oil of Citrus aurantium on the Electrophysiological Properties of Isolated Perfused Rabbit AV-Node: Protective Role in the Prevention of Ouabain Toxicity International Journal of Morphology
Khori,Vahid; Nayebpour,Mohsen; Mansourian,Azad Reza; Davarian,Ali; Naseri,Mohsen; Salehi,Aref; Alizadeh,Ali-Mohamad.
Treatment of supraventricular arrhythmia includes a wide range of medical interventions. Herbal remedies are suitable alternatives to synthetic drugs due to their availability, minimal side effects and lower price. Pharmacological studies and traditional medical literature point to the cardiovascular effects of Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) in many instances. In the present study we used isolated perfused AV-node of rabbit as an experimental model to determine the effect of various concentrations of essential oil of C. aurantium (0.1-0.3 v/v) on the nodal conduction time and refractoriness of an isolated rabbit AV-nodal preparations. Selective stimulation protocols were used to independently quantify AV nodal recovery, facilitation and fatigue in 18...

Alveolar Ridge Conservation by Early Bone Formation After Tooth Extraction in Rabbits: A Histomorphological Study International Journal of Morphology
Cantín,Mario; Olate,Sergio; Fuentes,Ramón; Vásquez,Bélgica.
Alveolar ridge volume loss is an irreversible process. To prevent this physiological event, which typically result in significant local anatomical changes in both the horizontal and the vertical dimension, some strategies are indicated to minimize the loss of ridge volume that typically follows tooth extraction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if three different bone grafts could promote new bone formation in the alveolar socket following tooth extraction for the alveolar ridge conservation. First mandibular molars of male adults rabbits were extracted and the extraction sockets were randomly treated with three different bone grafts, one xenograft and two alloplastic grafts, and a group that received no treatment (blood clot). The extraction...

Amebic Liver Abscess in Rat: Morphological Evidence of Innate Immune Modulation by the Sympathetic Nervous System International Journal of Morphology
Muñoz-Ortega,Martín Humberto; Cervantes-García,Daniel; Quintanar-Stephano,Andrés; Campos-Esparza,María del Rosario; García-Lorenzana,Mario; Campos-Rodríguez,R; Rodríguez,M. G; Ventura-Juárez,Javier.
All organs of the immune system are innervated and almost all neurotransmitter receptors are present on immune cells. We studied the effects of sympathetic innervation in the development of amebic liver abscess (ALA) in rats. Our results showed that lack of sympathetic innervation promote a decrease in size of ALA. We found scarce amoebas, increased the number of neutrophils and a few collagen fibers surrounding the abscess, meanwhile in control group, we observed abscesses areas with typical necrosis including trophozoites and neutrophils. Macrophages were differentially distributed surrounding abscess area in control and vehicle groups, but equally located in and outside of the abscesses in sympathectomized rat. No significant differences were observed...

An Anomalous Left External Jugular Vein Draining into Right Subclavian Vein: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Rajanigandha,V; Rajalakshmi,R; Ranade,A. V; Pai,M. M; Prabhu,L. V; Ashwin,K; Jiji,P. J..
Knowledge of the varying drainage patterns of superficial veins of head & neck, in particular, jugular veins are not only important for anatomists but also for the surgeons operating at this level and to clinicians in general. The variations are important for interventional radiologists too who perform transjugular procedures, such as port implantations and the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt or selective venous samplings. Results of recent studies report that the superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein (EJV), is been increasingly utilized for cannulation to conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. We report a very unusual presentation of external jugular vein on left side of an embalmed male cadáver....

An Anthropometry Study of the Shoulder Region in a Chinese Population and its Correlation with Shoulder Disease International Journal of Morphology
Yu,Ming-Yang; Zhang,Wei; Zhang,De-Bao; Zhang,Xiao-Dong; Gu,Gui-Shan.
Purpose: There is a paucity of data which reflected the relationship between morphology and incidence of shoulder disorders with respect to the ethnic Chinese population. We used anteroposterior radiographs to measure the Acromion Index (AI) and Acromioglenoid Angle (AA) of Chinese patients. The baseline was defined as the line that connected the superior and inferior osseous margins of the glenoid cavity. In order to calculate the AI, the distance from the baseline to the lateral margin of the acromion was measured and then divided by the distance from the baseline to the lateral aspect of the humeral head. The AA was defined as the angle formed by the intersecting line drawn tangent to the sclerotic line of the acromion undersurface and the baseline...

An Osteometric Evaluation of the Foramen Spinosum and Venosum International Journal of Morphology
Lazarus,L; Naidoo,N; Satyapal,K. S.
The foramen spinosum (FS) and foramen venosum (of Vesalius) (FV) are alisphenoid apertures situated within the hub of the middle cranial fossa in close proximity to foramen ovale (FO). The FS and FV provide a passage to important neurovascular structures. An accurate knowledge of the morphometric details of the FS and FV including their shape, incidence, relation to other foramina and/or presence of any anomalies may represent a reliable anatomical landmark during surgical explorative maneuvers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the morphologic and morphometric features of the FS and FV. The study was conducted on 100 dry human skulls (n= 200) obtained from the osteological bank at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, to produce a database...

An Osteometric Evaluation of the Jugular Foramen International Journal of Morphology
Ishwarkumar,S; Naidoo,N; Lazarus,L; Pillay,P; Satyapal,K. S.
The jugular foramina (JF) are bilateral openings situated between the lateral part of the occipital bone and the petrous part of the temporal bones in the human skull. It is a bony canal transmitting neurovascular structures from the posterior cranial fossa through the base of the skull to the carotid space. Since the JF depicts variations in shape, size, height and volume between different racial and gender groups, along with distinctive differences in laterality from its intracranial to extracranial openings, knowledge of the JF may be necessary to understand intracranial pathologies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphometric measurements of the jugular foramen. Various morphometric parameters of the JF and its relation to...
